With the financial support of Norwegian grants, as part of the "Correctional Services" programme pre-defined project "Establishment of Training centre infrastructure and model prison blocks for training opportunities in the Olaine prison territory" activities, training for volunteer work coordinators was organized on February 2 and 3, 2024.

During the two-day training, training was attended by participants from the Latvian Prison Administration, State Probation Service, Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Latvia and the Latvian Red Cross, as well as foreign participants from the Lithuanian Red Cross, Norwegian Correctional Service, International Red Cross and Oslo Red Cross.

During the training the following topics were discussed:

  • What does it mean to be a volunteer in a prison?
  • What are the challenges, opportunities and contribution of volunteering for common public safety?
  • What is the experience of volunteering in prisons in Norway and other European countries?

This kind of training, which brings together volunteer coordinators from the Latvian Correctional services in prisons as well as representatives of the Red Cross, is taking place for the first time in Latvia.

The training took place in cooperation with the trainers of the Oslo Red Cross  - Network after imprisonment (Nettverk etter soning - Oslo Røde Kors).
